Staging & Ride Route

2010 TBA

2009
Staging for the ride is at Harbor Park at 150 Park Avenue in Norfolk.

Harbor Park is the home of the Norfolk Tides, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets.

Staging will begin at 8:00am on Saturday, 10 October, 2009. Registration will be open from 8:00-11:00am. The first group of riders will depart at 9:30am from Harbor Park.

Although the 2009 ride has been in planning since last year’s event, we have recently received word from the Hampton Roads Regional Chiefs of Police Association (HRCOPA) that there would be no Police escorts this year. This year’s event will continue, but in a significantly different format than years past. Riders will begin to depart Harbor Park in Norfolk at 9:30am in groups of 30-50 riders. Lead riders with a clear understanding of the route will lead the riders at a safe and reasonable speed around the planned route, ending at Bayside Harley-Davidson in Portsmouth. In addition, the V-DOT Safety Traffic Center has agreed to post traffic alerts warning motorists about the high volume of motorcycles on the interstates that morning.

This years’ event has been recognized and endorsed by Timothy M. Kaine, Governor of Virginia, and the Mayors of the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

Due to construction at Harbor Park for the Light Rail, Park Avenue is closed. The map below demonstrates how to enter the registration area.
Staging is on an as-registered basis. Pre-registered individuals may enter through the 3rd Base/Left Field side entrance. On-site registrants should enter at the East Main Street Ballpark Entrance.

Group Riding Guidelines
For safety reasons we will ride in a staggered formation (see illustration below). The minimum recommended spacing to the bike directly in front of you should not be less than two seconds (the two second rule). The bike in the lane to your left or right should not be less than one second ahead of you. You will find that two seconds is a long distance when riding at highway speeds. That is, it's a long distance when everything is going well. Unfortunately, when things go wrong, two seconds distance is gone in the time it takes to realize you are in trouble.
