8th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week™ in North Carolina
April 18-25, 2010
The 8th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week™, the premier rally on the East Coast, is gearing up for a full week of great riding and entertainment.
The rally takes place Sunday, April 18th through Sunday April 25th this year. Many riders have decided to forego the hassles of Myrtle Beach and opt to spend their time and money in the Outer Banks where they’re welcomed by all the towns and locals in the area.
The Outer Banks is a 100-mile stretch of barrier islands along North Carolina’s northeastern coast. It offers some of the most scenic bike riding in the state, including four lighthouses, a ferryboat ride to Ocracoke Island, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the mysterious Roanoke Island and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Always in America’s Top Ten Beach listing, the Outer Banks ranks up there with Maui and Kauai Hawaii.
There will be over 100 venders at 5 different sites and live music all over town including a stage at Outer Banks Harley-Davidson. Bike shows abound at three locations. Other highlights include a poker run, pig pickin, pin stop, guided tours, chopper builders, stunt riders and of course every night one of the local clubs is designated as the Official Party Central.
Don’t forget to ride to all 3 dealerships in the area for the Ride 2 Three contest. You will be entered to win the $1000 Harley-Davidson shopping spree that will be given away during Bike Week.
Once again we’re giving a shout out to all the sexy women who plan to join us for Bike Week. Enter the Miss Outer Banks Bike Week™ bikini contest for a chance to win diamonds and to represent Outer Banks Bike Week™ in 2011.
The new ride in 2010 is “Run for the Ferry”. A scenic ride that takes you South 80 miles, past, Pea Island and Hatteras National Seashore State Park and across a ferry to the remote island of Ocracoke. Visit 15 of the 20 listed sites and the way down and you may be the winner of the grand prize, a free vacation for next year’s Outer Banks Bike Week™ including a beach house and restaurant gift certificates.
Vertigo Tattoos will be a part of Bike Week again this year with their 8 Days of Mayhem at the shop in nearby Manns Harbor, a short ride coming out of Nags Head, crossing Roanoke and then the blackness of Alligator River. Each day will feature a different genre of bike show and bands will play all week day and night. The burnout pit and the Wall of Death Stunt Show will also be back this year.
Nags Head Harley-Davidson hosts one of the bike shows and will also be the place to test ride a Harley®. The Harley-Davidson Demo Fleet will be on hand at this location to satisfy the curiosity of old and new customers.
“No matter whether you carouse at an “official” party or not, it’s hard not to have a good time while in the Banks. Despite the party atmosphere offered by the bars and nightclubs, no rally is worth the effort unless it has good riding. And the heartbeat of this rally remains the motorcycling opportunities. Whether it’s the narrow strip of sand up north that cuts through Duck and Corolla, or the deserted expanses that comprise Cape Hatteras down south, excellent roads within easy distance abound. The weather is generally a pleasure and the seafood so fresh you’d swear the cook’s fishing waders are still wet. That’s a combination hard for any biker to resist.” Robert Filla, Editor Thunder Press
Fun at OBX Bike Week 2009
Double the Fun at Outer Banks Bike Week™ 2009
Outer Banks Bike Week™ Attendance Doubles!
Outer Banks, NC….A month before the rally you could sense that the 7th Outer Banks Bike Week™ was going to be really big.
More hotels and cottages were booked, more emails and phone calls came in asking for event schedules, and more riders called wanting to know if the towns actually wanted them to come.
The town of Myrtle Beach had recently “cancelled” their back-to-back May rallies and threatened to enforce new biker restrictions. Riders wanted to be sure the Outer Bank’s law enforcement would not harass them for minor issues and would instead appreciate their tourist dollars.
And all the indications were right on. Bikers came in record numbers, despite the economy.
Estimated by door swings at the Harley shops and revenue reporting, more than 20,000 motorcycles showed up and many of them showed up on Monday, 3 days before Outer Banks Bike Week™ even started.
Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson in Currituck County, the focal point for riders, was jammed throughout the week. The Kitty Hawk H.O.G.™ (Harley Owners Group™) Chapter volunteers manned the information tables where lines formed daily to find out what was going on and to pick up rally guides, maps, contest brochures and restaurant coupons.
All three Harley-Davidson dealerships in the area (Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson in Currituck, Nags Head Harley-Davidson in Nags Head and Outer Banks Harley-Davidson in Elizabeth City) were the hosts for Outer Banks Bike Week™. Started 7 years ago with a simple bike show and poker run, no one ever imagined that it would become a major motorcycle rally so quickly.
Although riders came from all over the U.S.A, there were large numbers from the east coast states of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Carolina and South Carolina. Many of the bikers had never been to this area before and were elated to find this treasure.
Many motorcycle rallies are centralized in big fields and most everything happens there, similar to major festivals. But Outer Banks Bike Week™ is a riding rally. There is much to see and do in the area… 5 lighthouses, fishing charters, Wright Brothers Memorial, Hatteras National Seashore Park, pirate lore, 100 miles of scenic beaches to ride and ferries to the various barrier islands. In fact the Ocracoke Ferry broke all records. They had over 1200 bikers take the ferry both Friday and Saturday.
The Outer Banks Passport Run sponsored by the Outer Banks Tourism Bureau took riders to 15 different locations scattered throughout the area. Marlene Mclamb the lucky winner from Salisbury MD won a full weeks vacation in the Outer Banks for next years rally. A rental house from Elan Vacations and over $200 in local restaurant gift certificates was the grand prize.
Greg McElroy from Virginia Beach was more than ecstatic to learn he had won the $ 2000 Harley Shopping Spree by visiting all 4 participating Harley shops. He already had his wish list of pipes and chrome picked out.
There were lots of vendor goodies to check out, the parties were great fun, the bikini girls were hot, (the beautiful Shandi Lester was crowned Miss Outer Banks Bike Week™ 2010) and the local bands River City Gang and Pawn Shop Lifters who played originals won over a new group of fans.
More riders than ever joined with friends to rent the many houses available on the Outer Banks. It was a way to cut costs and have a great place to visit and party with friends.
But it was the way the locals and the local businesses embraced the bikers that will leave a lasting impression. There were hundreds of signs welcoming bikers and offering Bike Week specials throughout the area.
Everyone in town wanted to get involved and everyone found a way to be part of the fun. Retail shops, hotels and restaurants wanted and needed the business but many were just happy to have these well mannered riders show off their motorcycles and share their enthusiasm for riding.
By demand, Outer Banks Bike Week™ will be a full Sunday to Sunday, April 18-25, in 2010.
By demand we will have more vendors and events to fill up an entire week.
By demand we will order up the same fantastic weather.
We ask you all to come back and enjoy a great time with friends, old and new, at Outer Banks Bike Week™ 2010.

The picture perfect weather and the long list of event activities also had a hand in ratcheting up the number of bikers this year to what has been estimated at close to 20,000. That is more than last year when “the Banks” hosted two motorcycle rallies at the same time.
The Outer Banks area runs from southern Currituck County, to its northern beaches of Duck and Corolla, through Dare County and the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, over to Roanoke Island, Mann’s Harbor and then further south to Hatteras and Ocracoke Island. The venue is spread out enough to ride without any crowd or traffic concerns but intimate enough to make friends for life.

The “Treasure Hunt”, a new event for the rally and sponsored by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, had bikers on the road looking for clues at different local “treasure” spots throughout the Outer Banks. “How did Jockey’s Ridge get its name?” is a question which gave riders a chance to visit the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dune where the Wright Brothers first took flight. (Answer: Early inhabitants captured wild mustang ponies and raced them at the base of the dune.)
Riding north towards Corolla on Hwy 12, bikers had to slow down on this 2 lane road to the 25- 35 miles per hour speed limit. It was an opportunity for riders to enjoy fabulous vistas of Currituck Sound and take in the lighthouse and small villages as they headed toward the Corolla Wild Horse Museum to uncover the “horsepower” of the herd.
(Answer: 91 horses in the Wild Spanish Mustang Herd on the beach.)

The “Treasure Hunt” Grand Prize won by William Cobbs of Portsmouth, VA was a free vacation in the Outer Banks for next year’s bike week which included a beach house for the entire week from Élan Vacations and restaurant gift certificates from NY Pizza Pub, Kelly’s, The Pearl, Lucky 12 Tavern, The Black Pelican and Awful Arthur’s.
Like any good bike rally, Outer Banks Bike Week™ had more than enough activities and entertainment to keep riders going all week. The rally events were all free due to the local business sponsors in the community who have been extremely enthusiastic and generous in supporting this growing event during their shoulder season.

The Bike Show was hosted at Nags Head Harley-Davidson by the Red Knights of NC Chapter IV. There were a record number of entries this year but the top award, Best in Show, went to a father whose Military Tribute Road King was a dedication to his son who was killed in the war in Iraq.
Cute and sassy Nikki Kelly (shown above) whose fiancé rides a Dyna Wide Glide, won the $1000 cash prize in the bikini contest and was named Miss Outer Banks Bike Week™. Thrilled at winning her first contest, she has already put some of the money towards a good cause; plane tickets to visit her family in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Master of Ceremony for the Bikini Contest was none other than the Outer Bank’s local Elvis impersonator “Felvis.” Eileen, owner of Diamond ‘n Dunes, knocked out a couple of great Elvis tunes and was hilarious as a female Elvis.
Live music at the stage at Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson® included Ted Riser from Columbus, Ohio, and local favorites Inside Out and hard rocking Southern Thunder.
|
Cool gear abounded at the vendor sites at Port O’Call, NY Pizza Pub, Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, Stan White Realty, Kitty Hawk Harley-Davidson, Nags Head Harley-Davidson and Outer Banks Harley-Davidson.
Vertigo Tattoo on Manns Harbor, also a vendor site, always puts on a great event. This year was no exception. Activities included the talented Wall of Death Motorcycle Stunt Riders and top notch tattoo contests.
The rally events also expanded further out this year as more and more businesses signed on as daytime destinations. The farewell party was held in Jarvisburg, NC at Weeping Radish Brewery. Lee Robinson General Store in Hatteras Village helped sponsor the Treasure Hunt.
|
The Harley-Davidson® Demo Fleet, poker run and night time party host spots Port O’Call, Kelly’s, and Outer Banks Brewing Station all gave bikers a ton of choices throughout the week.
The NC Education Lottery (which highlighted its recently launched Harley-Davidson® instant scratch-off ticket), the HOG Chapter Challenge and the Outer Banks Bike Week™ Puzzle Pin also added to the excitement of this action packed rally.
Outer Banks Bike Week™ has been hailed by all as a huge success!
Thank you to all our sponsors, vendors and especially to Kitty Hawk HOG® Chapter, Outer Banks HOG® Chapter and Bayside HOG® Chapter volunteers who worked hard to make the event run smoothly.
Mark your calendar for Outer Banks Bike Week™ 2009; April 23-26, 2009!!
